The reason it works as a board at all is that it is genuinely hardwood with a reasonably tight grain, so it is safe for food when properly sealed. The reason it does not excel is everything else: it dents and scars faster than maple, it drinks up moisture through any gap in its finish, and the budget construction it usually comes in works against longevity. It is a fine first board, not a forever board.
How does hevea compare to hard maple?
Maple is harder, more stable, and built to last far longer; hevea is cheaper and lighter. The two are both closed-grain hardwoods, so on paper they look similar, but maple's higher density and better dimensional stability separate them in daily use. Hevea's main advantage is price, and that is close to its only advantage.

For most people rubberwood is safe, but anyone with a severe latex allergy should be cautious. The proteins that trigger latex allergy come from the tree's sap, and while the cured, kiln-dried timber contains far less of them than raw latex, trace amounts and processing residues are possible. The supply is large and the raw material is close to free, since the alternative is burning the spent trees. If you see parawood on a label, read it as budget rubberwood and set your expectations accordingly.
Is rubberwood toxic or food-safe?
Properly finished rubberwood is food-safe. The raw timber is treated with preservatives at the mill to stop mold and insects, but a finished, kiln-dried board sealed with food-grade mineral oil is safe for food contact. The catch is the seal: if the finish wears thin and bare rubberwood is exposed to constant moisture, it absorbs water and can harbor mold, so keep it oiled.
Can a rubberwood cutting board go in the dishwasher?
No. Like any solid wood board, rubberwood must never go in the dishwasher. The heat and prolonged soaking swell the wood, blow out the finger-jointed glue seams, and cause fast warping and cracking. Hand wash with warm soapy water, rinse, and stand it on edge to dry fully.
Is rubberwood or bamboo better for a cutting board?
Rubberwood is gentler on knives, bamboo is harder and more water-resistant, and neither matches maple.
