A surface crack in a wood cutting board is usually saveable. A crack running all the way through the board, or one along a glue seam, usually is not. For a shallow hairline crack, deep-condition the board with several coats of mineral oil to swell the wood back together, and clamp it while it rehydrates. For a full split, the board is done as a cutting surface, and forcing it back together with food-unsafe glue is not worth the risk.
Cracks scare people into tossing boards that could be saved, and they also tempt people into gluing back boards that should be retired. The right move depends entirely on how deep the crack goes and where it runs. Once you can read the crack, the decision is straightforward. Almost every crack traces back to the same cause anyway, which means the real fix is preventing the next one.
Can you fix a cracked wooden cutting board?
Sometimes. A shallow surface crack that follows the grain and does not go through the board can often be closed by rehydrating and re-oiling the wood, because dried-out wood shrinks and cracks, and restoring its moisture and oil swells the fibers back toward each other. A crack that runs edge to edge, goes clean through, or opens along a glue joint means the board's structure has failed, and that is not a safe repair.
Run this quick test. Hold the board up to a light. If you can see light through the crack, it goes all the way through and the board is compromised. If the crack is only on the surface and stops partway into the wood, you have a repair candidate. Flex the board gently, and if the crack visibly opens and closes, the structural integrity is gone.

How do you repair a surface crack in a cutting board?
Rehydrate and re-oil the wood so it swells back together. Warm some food-grade mineral oil, flood the cracked area and the whole board, and let it soak overnight. Repeat for three to four days, applying oil generously each day and working it into the crack. As the dried fibers absorb oil and moisture, a shallow crack will often tighten and nearly disappear.
For a crack that gapes slightly, clamp the board gently across the crack while it rehydrates, using a clamp or even heavy books, with wax paper to catch oil. Do not force it hard, just enough to encourage the swelling fibers to close. After the soak, finish with a coat of Board Balm to seal the surface and slow future drying. Should you use wood glue to fix a cracked cutting board?
Only if the glue is food-safe, and even then, only for a crack you can fully clean out, which is rarely the case on a used board. Most wood glues are not rated for repeated food contact, and you cannot get glue properly into a tight crack that has food residue and oil in it, so the repair fails and you have introduced a non-food-safe material into your prep surface. For a board that cracked through, gluing is a false economy.
The exception is a fresh, clean split with no contamination, which a woodworker can sometimes re-glue with food-safe Titebond III and clamping. For a board that has been in kitchen use, cleaned dozens of times, and then cracked, that clean re-glue is not realistic. Retire it to a serving or bread board where it is not a food-safety concern, or replace it.
Why do cutting boards crack in the first place?
Boards crack because the wood dried out and shrank unevenly, and dry wood is weak wood. When a board loses moisture faster than the oil can protect it, usually from lack of conditioning, hot water, a dishwasher, or dry indoor air, the fibers shrink and the internal tension tears them apart. The crack is the wood failing under its own drying stress.

Is it time to replace the board or can it be saved?
Retire a board as a cutting surface when the crack goes through it, runs along a glue seam, opens when you flex it, or is deep enough to trap food you cannot clean out. Any of those means the board can no longer be reliably cleaned or trusted structurally under a knife. A saveable board, by contrast, has only surface-level cracks that respond to oiling and do not compromise the slab.
A retired board is not garbage. Demote it to a serving board, a bread board, or a trivet, where structure and deep cleaning matter less. Do end-grain boards crack more than edge-grain?
End-grain boards can develop small checks at the ends if badly neglected, but a well-made, well-oiled end-grain board is not more crack-prone than edge-grain, and its construction actually distributes stress well. How do you stop a cutting board from cracking again?
Oil it every three to four weeks, keep it out of the dishwasher, never soak it, dry it standing on edge, and keep it away from heat sources like ovens and radiators. Cracking is a moisture-loss problem, so anything that keeps the board's moisture stable prevents it. A board conditioned with a wax-and-oil blend holds moisture longer than one done with plain oil, which buys you more margin.
Store the board where air circulates rather than trapped flat against a wall or in a hot cabinet. Consistent, boring maintenance is what separates a board that lasts 20 years from one that cracks in two.
Can you sand out a crack in a cutting board?
You can sand out a very shallow surface check, but sanding does not fix a crack with depth, it only removes the top layer while the crack continues below. If the crack disappears after light sanding and refinishing, it was cosmetic. If it reappears or you can still feel it, sanding is not the answer and you are back to rehydrating or retiring.
